LASA parent spoke about technology and her role in volunteering with ϱ schools. She feels that ϱ needs to do more to increase technology in schools. She wants the District of Innovation process to think like Star Trek and focus on math and science in schools. Meeting Discussion: Introductions were done where committee members gave their name and role. Raul Sanchez discussed expected outcomes of the meeting as to gain knowledge on what a District of Innovation is and to begin brainstorming ideas. Raul explained the following: what is a district of innovation, what schools districts are eligible, why pursue this option, what are the legal requirements, what is the process, things to consider, and timeline. Raul explained that committee will develop an overarching plan and a separate process will be developed for individual schools for schools to apply for individual exemptions. There was a committee discussion around clarifying what the plan will actually do. Members asked if the plan was campus by campus or would district mandating certain things for campuses. It was explained that our plan would determine that, but that some things might be for the entire district while other exemptions would be campus-based decisions. A suggestion was made for the committee to include some guidelines or potential pitfalls around certain exemptions. A committee member requested to have information about why families are leaving ϱ ISD, and the DRE Leaver study was placed on the District of Innovation website for committee members to review. Committee members broke into small groups to examine principal feedback from the Urban Education 2.0 meeting and begin discussing possible exemptions. Some committee commented that they did not have enough information to provide feedback at this time. It was suggested that they receive a presentation about district initiatives and challenges. LASA student representative spoke about the need for teachers to teach specialized courses and the lack of opportunity for students to pursue their interests because of seat time. He expressed that students cant do internships or volunteer or pursue out of the classroom experiences because of the required seat time. Reagan student representative talked about wanting to attend at nursing program but she cannot because of the required seat time. Other committee member spoke about her education outside of the US and how she was required to experience work three times each week to explore various careers. Another committee member spoke from the industry perspective where they see a need for soft skills. Education ϱ representative spoke about potential changes in legislature. He also asked if the district could allow for certain changes without this Innovation Plan and that he was worried that this plan could instill fear if not written correctly.
