Gus Garcia YMLA Honor Namesake in Memorial Service

Students and staff at the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy will honor the campus’ namesake at a community memorial service Monday morning. Garcia passed away in December 2018 after a full life of service to the city of ÁùºÏ±¦µä and ÁùºÏ±¦µä ISD. 

What: Campus and community memorial for Gus Garcia, the namesake of the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy — the district’s all-boys middle school in East ÁùºÏ±¦µä. 

Garcia served on the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1978, including as president of the board during his final year. Garcia also served as the first Hispanic mayor of ÁùºÏ±¦µä after a successful election in 2001. He served a total of 10 years on city council. 

Who: Speakers include Superintendent Paul Cruz, Gus Garcia YMLA Principal Sterlin McGruder, ÁùºÏ±¦µä Mayor Steve Adler, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett and State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez. 

Student performances, including the Gus Garcia YMLA drumline and band, will be highlights of the service.
