New Sustainability Manager Adds Another Shade of Green

Darien Clary was hired as ÁùºÏ±¦µä ISD’s new sustainability manager.

Sustainability is a part of ÁùºÏ±¦µä's mission to prepare students for college, career and life by providing opportunities that encourage students to be environmentally aware and involved in their communities.

As sustainability manager, Clary will refine and manage the roadmap for ÁùºÏ±¦µä to become an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable school district in air quality, energy, food, nature, procurement, transportation, waste and water.

ÁùºÏ±¦µä has had several recent successes in its sustainability initiatives, including the National Wildlife Federation naming Small Green Tech Academy as one of the top 10 Eco-Schools in the nation, the ÁùºÏ±¦µä ISD Performing Arts Center receiving an ÁùºÏ±¦µä Energy Green Building five-star rating and LEED silver certification of Guerrero Thompson Elementary School.

Clary will develop, implement, maintain and track the district’s sustainability initiatives in accordance with the district’s sustainability framework. This includes integrating sustainability initiatives into the areas of teaching and learning, infrastructure and operations, and community and culture.

Prior to joining ÁùºÏ±¦µä, Clary served as the sustainability coordinator at ÁùºÏ±¦µä Community College, where she worked with individual departments and campus communities to develop and implement sustainability initiatives with consideration of cost effectiveness, feasibility and effect on greening the college.

Prior to ACC, Clary worked as a program manager and later as a consultant for Columbia University’s Center for Environment, Economy and Society. There, she implemented community-based programs to promote social and economic development in the Dominican Republic through environmental preservation and resource management.

Clary earned a master of public health degree in behavioral science and global health from the University of Texas at ÁùºÏ±¦µä, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Southwestern University. She is a proud graduate of ÁùºÏ±¦µä ISD.
