First Central Texas College Signing Day Celebrates Academic Excellence

More than 400 students pledge to universities Friday

Inspired by the NCAA’s National Signing Day, Central Texas is holding its first College Signing Day to showcase that excellence in the classroom is as important as achievement in athletics. More than 400 graduating high-school seniors will come together to “pledge” to pursue their higher education goals through attending a college or university or by earning their professional credentials or certificates.

This will be a fun, exciting pep-rally where students will sign commitments to enroll with representatives from their chosen colleges and universities. They will sit with fellow students who will be attending the same institution in the fall.  There will be fun college-focused games, prizes, mascot dance-off and college cheerleaders.

The program features:

  • Julian Castro, former Mayor of San Antonio, and the creator of San Antonio College Signing Day
  • Judge Sarah Eckhardt, Travis County’s first female County Judge
  • Steve Adler, Mayor of ϱ
  • Dr. Paul Cruz, Superintendent of ϱ
  • Dr. Kelly Crook, Superintendent of Del Valle Independent School District and
  • Vince Young, former star football player, University of Texas at ϱ.

The Central Texas College Signing Day is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, at Huston-Tillotson University in the Mary E. Branch Gymnasium, 900 Chicon St. This is an invitation-only event. Registration is required.

“What better way to highlight higher education than to bring young people together to meet with area colleges and universities at one location for a massive signing and send off,” said HT President and Chief Executive Officer, Larry Earvin, Ph.D. “We are pleased to host this community-wide event in collaboration with local higher education and City of ϱ representatives in order to rally support around obtaining an undergraduate degree.”

CTX Signing Day coincides with the National Decision Day, sponsored by the National College Advising Corps Decision Day. The annual event is tied to the date on which most seniors must inform a college of their plans to enroll. The goal of CTX Signing Day is to recognize and celebrate seniors for their postsecondary plans and encourage younger students and families to prepare early for college.
