ÁùºÏ±¦µä serves more than 10 million lunches annually, meets new federal nutritional guidelines
AUSTIN, Texas—Tomorrow, Janey Thornton, deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will visit the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders to learn about ÁùºÏ±¦µä ISD’s farm-to-school program and how the district is meeting new federal nutritional guidelines for foods served in school cafeterias.
What: Thornton and regional USDA leaders will visit the campus during the lunch service for students. The deputy undersecretary will be available to speak with media about federal nutrition programs and standards, including new requirements for school meals and snacks.

Background: Deputy Under Secretary Thornton is responsible for improving the health and well-being of Americans by expanding access to nutritious, affordable food and providing dietary guidance and coordinating nutrition policy and education.
Through the Healthy, Hunger-free Kids Act, the USDA has strengthened nutrition standards for during the past two school years. The department also has new requirements for , which go into effect this summer.
ÁùºÏ±¦µä provides year-round food services to students, including meals and snacks. During the regular school term, the district prepares and serves about 61,000 lunches daily—more than 10 million annually—at 116 locations throughout ÁùºÏ±¦µä. ÁùºÏ±¦µä also operates a summer meals program.
