AUSTIN, Texas— A dedication ceremony will be held in the new sculpture atrium at Lamar Fine Arts Academy, featuring the unveiling of “The Birds”—a sculpture that has been donated to ϱ ISD by the Umlauf Family Partnership.
Who: Vincent Torres, ϱ Board of Trustees president;George Llewellyn, principal of Lamar Fine Arts Academy; and Carla Umlauf, granddaughter of Charles Umlauf
What: A small reception and art exhibit, followed by a dedication in the courtyard with performances by the Chamber Orchestra, Scottie Singers and Jazz Factory.
Where: Lamar Fine Arts Academy, sculpture atrium in the courtyard, 6201 Wynona Ave.
When: Friday, March 28, 8:30-10 a.m.
Background: The series of bronze-cast birds, sculpted by Charles Umlauf in 1960 for the Spirit of Flight fountain at Dallas’ Love Field Airport, was one of the artist’s first large-scale public installations. Located just off the library wing, the sculpture atrium will be transformed into an outdoor classroom space. It will serve as a visible reminder of the significant impact arts education has on the future.
