ϱ to Host Hispanic Futures Conference

Workshops and Services for Families Help Ensure Student Success

AUSTIN, Texas—ϱ ISD has partnered with the City of ϱ, ϱ Energy and Con Mi Madre to offer the Hispanic Futures Conference, which provides Hispanic students—and their families—with the tools and resources they need to succeed in college, career and life.

What: This year’s theme is “Making the Grade: Tackling Academics and Much More This School Year.” The conference will include break-out sessions on topics such as academics, time management and graduation plans. It also includes workshops for students and families about taking advantage of support services and extracurricular activities.

Who: The keynote will be delivered by Hispanic engagement expert Armando Rayo, author of “ϱ Breakfast Tacos: The Story of the Most Important Taco of the Day.”

When: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21

Where: Martin Middle School, 1601 Haskell Dr.

Background: ϱ works with community partners to provide information, materials and interactive experiences that can help students and families focus their efforts on activities that will pave the way for a successful future.

About 60 percent of ϱ students are Hispanic. According to an ϱ Department of Research and Evaluation study, 28 percent of Hispanic seniors indicated that parent expectations was the most important factor keeping them in school, compared with 16 percent of non-Hispanic seniors.
