1 Big thing: It’s now easier to apply to specialty programs
|
|
💻 Now in its second year, the Common Application for Schools of Choice means families and students can fill out just one application for all our specialty programs.
Why it matters: Before, if students wanted to apply to LASA High School, Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, and an Early College High School program, they’d be filling out three different applications.
New this year: We've added our Dual Language programs to the application.
Getting started: You’ll need your ϱ ISD portal login credentials.
Yes, but: Some programs may require an essay, report cards or other materials. Check the application or reach out to the program for details.
Go deeper: Explore our programs at our , which details information on these programs and more.
-
For instance, did you know that we have a health careers track at LBJ Early College High School?
-
Or that students can earn two years of free college before they even get their high school diploma?
Learn more about campus programs at the upcoming ϱ ISD Showcase, 9 a.m.–noon this Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Palmer Events Center.

2. Reading Challenge Underway
|
|
ϱ ISD Interim Superintendent reads to elementary school students. |
📖 The first One Million Minutes Reading Challenge is here, and all ϱ ISD students can take part!
Why it matters: The campus that logs the most minutes in each learning community receives a prize. This challenge will help us learn more about which book titles and genres our students are most interested in reading.
What’s next: In addition to the One Million Minutes Challenge, students of all grade levels are invited to take part in on Thursday, Oct. 27.

3. Perez Elementary educator honored at Teacher of the Year celebration
|
Kari Johnston, 🐍 Perez Elementary School fifth-grade dual-language teacher, was celebrated Friday as .
-
Why teaching a dual-language classroom matters: “One of the things I’ve really grown to understand is that when students have a curriculum where they are represented –where their cultures or languages are part of the curriculum– that they engage more and are more excited about learning,” said Johnston.
What they’re saying: “Kari's commitment to students and our community helps keep us all grounded and rooted and motivated to serve the kids and families of Dove Springs,” said ϱ 2011 Teacher of the Year Caroline Sweet, who now serves as a bilingual instructional coach at Perez. “She inspires me and keeps me growing, even after 18 years in ϱ.”

4. Ann Richards School earns green building award
|
|
💡 At a ceremony this week, the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
-
Campuses modernized as part of the 2017 Bond were recognized for excellence in energy efficiency and sustainability by ϱ Energy Green Building.
-
Among the 12 schools that were recognized, five received additional LEED.
Why it matters: Research shows that students in school buildings that perform better on measures of sustainability have better learning outcomes, lower rates of absenteeism, and fewer health issues like asthma and allergies.
-
We’ve also seen a major reduction in energy costs in our modernized schools.
-
In the first year they opened, Govalle and Menchaca elementary schools saved the district nearly $75,000 in annual energy costs.
What they’re saying: “We applaud ϱ and the teams of leaders who worked on these projects for helping raise the bar for what we should expect from our built environment,” said Peter Templeton, President and CEO of USGBC.

5. College Fair: More than 100 choices
|
🏫 It’s almost time for juniors and seniors to take the next big step, and ϱ ISD wants to make things easier by bringing together more than 100 colleges and universities at the TACRO College Fair.
Yes, but: If your student is interested in attending the event, they need to reach out to their college adviser
Go deeper: For more information connect with via “Let’s Talk” at 512-866-6434 or email at college.advisor@austinisd.org.
💭 Nayeli’s thought bubble: Why didn’t my high school hold these kinds of college fairs? I had to spend a lot of gas money just to go get information from different universities and campuses.

6. ϱ ISD nurses get Narcan
|
🏥 ϱ ISD school nurses are getting opioid overdose treatment Narcan as part of a fentanyl prevention and emergency response plan that includes a partnership with local ϱ police, emergency management and local health authorities.
-
Why it matters: These steps, part of the district’s Fake & Fatal awareness campaign, comes in response to fentanyl overdoses in neighboring school districts and rising national numbers of fentanyl-related fatalities.
Go deeper: With Halloween around the corner, the “Fake & Fatal” website offers community resources, fact sheets and tips for talking about the drug and its many forms, including brightly-colored that take on a similar appearance to candy.
By the numbers: Synthetic opioids such as fentanyl accounted for 67% of the 107,375 deaths attributed to drug overdoses and drug poisonings for the 12-month period ending Jan. 2022, according to the .
