ÁùºÏ±¦µä Recognizes Pride Week Sept. 15–19

Sept. 13–21 is ÁùºÏ±¦µä Pride Week, a time to recognize the LGBT community. ÁùºÏ±¦µä ISD is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive environment for LGBT students and staff, and we are proud to recognize Pride Week by hosting two events.

The first is a kickoff event for staff beginning at 4 p.m. Sept. 15 that includes a photography exhibit, panel discussion with LGBT experts and a statement of support from Interim Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz. This event will take place at the ÁùºÏ±¦µä Board Auditorium, 1111 W. Sixth St., Building B, Room 100.

The second is a student event in partnership with the district and its Gay-Straight Alliances. The event takes place from 6–8 p.m. Sept. 18. It will include pizza, a meet-and-greet with other students and professionals from the LGBT community and discussions about the needs of and resources available to LGBT students.

For student confidentiality protection, the student celebration is not open to the public or the media.

ÁùºÏ±¦µä Pride Week began in 1990 to celebrate the city's diverse culture and community. Pride Week is recognized in cities worldwide and is a time dedicated to celebrating the LGBT community with initiatives that focus on a range of topics including education, advocacy, equal rights and anti-bullying. The week is one component of the gay pride movement, which was largely formalized after the Stonewall riots of 1969.
